Early Life and Career

Constantius III was born in Naissus, Moesia, in 370 AD. His father was Constantius I, a Roman general, and his mother was Galla, a noblewoman. Constantius III had a distinguished military career, serving under the emperors Theodosius I and Honorius. In 411 AD, he was appointed magister militum per Gallias, the commander of the Roman army in Gaul.

Reign

Constantius III was proclaimed emperor by his troops in 421 AD. He was initially opposed by the emperor Honorius, but the two emperors eventually reached an agreement. Constantius III was given control of the western provinces of the Roman Empire, while Honorius retained control of the eastern provinces.

During his reign, Constantius III faced a series of challenges. The Visigoths, under their king Alaric, had invaded Italy and were threatening Rome. Constantius III defeated the Visigoths in the Battle of Arelate in 422 AD, but Alaric escaped and continued to raid Italy. In addition, Constantius III faced the threat of usurpers. In 423 AD, the general Jovinus was proclaimed emperor in Gaul. Constantius III defeated Jovinus and had him executed.

Death and Legacy

Constantius III died in Ravenna in 423 AD. The cause of his death is unknown. He was succeeded by his son, Valentinian III.
