Excerpt

The first American tank was the M1917, which was developed in response to the British Mark I tank. The M1917 was a large, slow-moving vehicle that was armed with a 6-pounder gun and three machine guns. It was not very effective in combat, and only a few were produced.

After World War I, the US Army continued to experiment with armored fighting vehicles. In the 1920s, the Army developed the M1921 light tank and the M1928 medium tank. These tanks were more successful than the M1917, and they were used in a variety of roles.

In the 1930s, the Army began to develop a new generation of armored fighting vehicles. These vehicles were lighter, faster, and more powerful than their predecessors. The most important of these new vehicles was the M4 Sherman tank, which was used extensively in World War II.

Early US Armor Tanks 1916-40 is a comprehensive history of the development and deployment of American armored fighting vehicles during the interwar period. The book is well-written and well-illustrated, and it is an essential reference for anyone interested in the history of American armored warfare.
