The Early Years

Jerrie Cobb was born in Norman, Oklahoma, in 1931. From an early age, she exhibited a fearless spirit and an unquenchable thirst for adventure. She earned her pilot's license at the tender age of 16 and quickly ascended the ranks in the world of aviation. In 1960, she became the first woman to qualify for the astronaut training program of Project Mercury, NASA's ambitious mission to send humans into orbit.

Meanwhile, Wally Funk was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1930. As a child, she developed a deep fascination with aircraft and dreamed of becoming a pilot. Despite the societal norms that discouraged women from pursuing careers in aviation, she persisted and obtained her pilot's license in 1955. Funk went on to establish several aviation records, including becoming the first female to fly solo across the North Atlantic Ocean.

The Mercury 13

In 1961, NASA sought to recruit women for its astronaut training program. Thirteen highly qualified female pilots, including Cobb and Funk, were selected as candidates for the project, which became known as the "Mercury 13." These women underwent a rigorous battery of physical and psychological tests designed to simulate the extreme conditions of spaceflight.

Despite excelling in the training program and demonstrating their exceptional abilities, the Mercury 13 women were ultimately denied the opportunity to fly in space. At the time, NASA officials cited concerns about the physiological limitations of women and the potential risks to their reproductive health. This decision dealt a crushing blow to the aspirations of the women and effectively halted their path to becoming astronauts.

Continuing the Fight

Undeterred by the setback, Cobb and Funk refused to let their dreams die. They continued to fly and advocate for the inclusion of women in space exploration. Cobb testified before Congress on behalf of female astronauts, and Funk became an outspoken critic of the barriers facing women in aviation.

In 1972, NASA finally appointed its first female astronauts, and over the years, women have made significant contributions to the field of spaceflight. However, the legacy of the Mercury 13 remains a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by the pioneers who paved the way.
