About the Author

Sir William Francis Patrick Napier KCB (1785-1860) was a British Army officer, historian, and military theorist. He is best known for his History of the War in the Peninsula and in the South of France from 1807 to 1814, which is considered one of the classic works of military history.

Napier was born in Celbridge, County Kildare, Ireland, on 17 December 1785. He joined the British Army in 1800 and served in the Peninsular War from 1808 to 1814. He was wounded several times during the war and eventually lost his right arm at the Battle of Ciudad Rodrigo.

After the war, Napier retired from the army and devoted himself to writing. He published his History of the War in the Peninsula and in the South of France from 1807 to 1814 in six volumes between 1828 and 1840. The book was a critical and commercial success, and it remains one of the most important works of military history ever written.

Napier died in London on 12 February 1860. He is buried in St Paul's Cathedral.
