Choosing the Right Breed

There are many different breeds of sheep to choose from, each with its own unique characteristics. Some of the most popular breeds for pet sheep include:

  • Suffolk
  • Hampshire
  • Dorset
  • Katahdin
  • Icelandic

When choosing a breed, it's important to consider your climate, the size of your property, and your goals for raising sheep. If you're not sure which breed is right for you, talk to a local sheep farmer.

Housing and Fencing

Sheep need a safe and secure place to live. Their enclosure should be well-fenced to prevent predators from getting in. The fence should also be high enough to prevent sheep from jumping out.

In addition to a fence, sheep also need a shelter to protect them from the elements. The shelter should be well-ventilated and large enough for all of your sheep to fit comfortably.

Feeding and Watering

Sheep are herbivores and their diet consists mainly of grass and hay. You can also supplement their diet with grain and other feedstuffs.

Sheep need access to fresh water at all times. You can provide water in a trough or a bucket.

Lambing and Shearing

Ewes (female sheep) typically give birth to one or two lambs each year. Lambing usually occurs in the spring. It's important to be on hand to assist with lambing if necessary.

Sheep need to be sheared once or twice a year to remove their wool. Shearing should be done by a professional shearer.

Health and Care

Sheep are generally healthy animals, but they can be susceptible to certain diseases and parasites. It's important to vaccinate your sheep and deworm them regularly.

You should also check your sheep regularly for any signs of illness or injury. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Raising pet sheep can be a rewarding experience. By following the tips in this guide, you can provide your sheep with a happy and healthy life.

Happy sheeping!
