An Image Of A City Skyline Next To A Field Of Crops, Symbolizing The Connection Between Urban And Rural Communities The City And The Farm Crisis (Annual E F Schumacher Lectures 6)

Our current food systems are not only unsustainable, they inflict hardship upon the very people who produce our food: our farmers. While the challenges faced by rural communities are often overlooked, they have a profound impact on the health and well-being of our entire society.

The book, "The City And The Farm Crisis: Annual Schumacher Lectures," explores the complex relationship between urban and rural communities and offers solutions to the challenges they both face.

The City's Reliance on the Farm

Cities are often seen as separate from rural areas, but in reality, they are deeply interconnected. Cities rely on rural communities for their food, water, and other resources.

However, the current food system is not sustainable. It is based on the exploitation of farmers and the destruction of the environment. This system is not only unjust, it is also a threat to our food security.

The Farm Crisis

Farmers are facing a number of challenges, including:

* Low commodity prices * Rising costs of production * Climate change * Lack of access to land

These challenges are forcing many farmers to give up their livelihoods. In the United States, the number of farms has declined by more than half since 1950.

Bridging the Gap

The solutions to the challenges faced by urban and rural communities lie in bridging the gap between them. We need to create a food system that is sustainable, just, and resilient.

This will require:

* Increasing local food production * Supporting farmers * Reducing food waste * Educating consumers about the importance of food

The Schumacher Lectures

The Schumacher Lectures are a series of annual lectures that bring together leading thinkers to discuss the challenges facing our world. The lectures are named after E.F. Schumacher, an economist and environmentalist who wrote the book, "Small Is Beautiful."

The 2019 Schumacher Lectures focused on the theme of "The City And The Farm Crisis." The lectures explored the complex relationship between urban and rural communities and offered solutions to the challenges they both face.

The book, "The City And The Farm Crisis: Annual Schumacher Lectures," is a valuable resource for anyone who is interested in creating a more sustainable and just food system. The book offers a unique perspective on the challenges faced by urban and rural communities and provides practical solutions for bridging the gap between them.
