The American West is often portrayed as a land of white settlers and Native Americans. But what is often forgotten is that African-Americans also played a significant role in the settling of the West.

In his groundbreaking book The Conquest, historian John Hope Franklin tells the story of the thousands of African-American pioneers who settled the American West. Drawing on extensive research, Franklin tells the stories of these brave men and women who faced unimaginable challenges to build a new life for themselves and their families.

The African-American pioneers who settled the West came from all walks of life. Some were former slaves who were seeking freedom and opportunity. Others were free blacks who were looking for a better life for themselves and their children. Still others were immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean who were hoping to find a place where they could start over.

No matter what their backgrounds, the African-American pioneers who settled the West shared a common goal: to create a better life for themselves and their families. They were willing to work hard, sacrifice, and even risk their lives to achieve their dreams.

The African-American pioneers who settled the West faced many challenges. They were often discriminated against by white settlers and Native Americans. They had to deal with the harsh climate and the dangers of the frontier. And they often had to struggle to find food, shelter, and clothing.

Despite the challenges they faced, the African-American pioneers who settled the West persevered. They built homes, schools, and churches. They established businesses and farms. And they raised families that would go on to shape the history of the West.

The story of the African-American pioneers who settled the West is a story of courage, determination, and hope. It is a story that has been largely forgotten, but it is a story that deserves to be told.

The Conquest is a powerful and moving account of the African-American pioneers who settled the American West. It is a must-read for anyone who is interested in American history or the history of the American West.
