My parents were both white, Protestant, and American-born. I went to a white, Protestant church. I lived in a white, Protestant neighborhood. I went to a white, Protestant school. </p> <p> I always felt like I was different from the other kids. I was the only Jewish kid in my class. I was the only Jewish kid in my neighborhood. I was the only Jewish kid in my church. </p> <p> I didn't know what it meant to be Jewish. I didn't know any other Jewish people. I didn't know any Jewish history. I didn't know any Jewish culture. </p> <p> I just knew that I was different. I knew that I didn't fit in. I knew that I was an outsider. </p> <p> When I was in college, I started to explore my Jewish identity. I started to learn about Jewish history and culture. I started to meet other Jewish people. I started to go to synagogue. </p> <p> The more I learned about Judaism, the more I realized how much it had shaped me. I realized that my Jewish identity was a part of who I was, even though I had never been raised in a Jewish home. </p> <p> I also realized that my Jewish identity was not something that I could choose to ignore. It was a part of me, whether I liked it or not. </p> <p> I decided to write this memoir to share my story with others. I want to show people that it is possible to be both white and Jewish. I want to show people that it is possible to be both American and Jewish. </p> <p> I want to show people that it is possible to be both an insider and an outsider. </p> <p> My life has been a journey of self-discovery. I have learned that I am not just one thing. I am many things. I am white. I am Jewish. I am American. I am an outsider. I am an insider. I am me. </p> <footer> <p> </p> </footer> </article>
