About the Author

Lewis Carroll was born in Daresbury, Cheshire, England, on January 27, 1832. He was the eldest of eleven children born to the Reverend Charles Dodgson and Frances Jane Lutwidge. Carroll's father was a mathematician and logician, and his mother was a talented artist. Carroll inherited his father's love of mathematics and his mother's artistic talent.

Carroll began writing poetry and short stories as a child. He published his first book, a collection of poems called Phantasmagoria, in 1858. In 1865, he published Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which was an immediate success. Carroll followed up Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There in 1871. These two books have become two of the most beloved children's books of all time.

Carroll died in Guildford, Surrey, England, on January 14, 1898. He was buried in the Mount Cemetery in Guildford.

About the Illustrator

Sir John Tenniel was born in Bayswater, London, England, on February 28, 1820. He was the son of a sculptor and wood engraver. Tenniel studied art at the Royal Academy Schools. He began his career as a political cartoonist, but he is best known for his illustrations for Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There.

Tenniel's illustrations for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland are considered to be some of the most iconic illustrations in all of literature. They perfectly capture the whimsical and nonsensical world of Carroll's story. Tenniel's illustrations have helped to shape our understanding of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and have made it one of the most beloved children's books of all time.

Tenniel died in London, England, on February 25, 1914. He was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery in London.
