“The children of Sarajevo have been through a living hell. They have experienced things that no child should ever have to endure.”

- Jasna Hadzibegovic, author of Child Life in Wartime Sarajevo

Published in 2000 by the Women in Black and the War Childhood Museum of Sarajevo, Child Life in Wartime Sarajevo is a collection of stories, poems and artwork of children who lived in Sarajevo during the Siege of Sarajevo. The siege lasted from 1992 to 1996 and was one of the most brutal and longest sieges in modern history. During the siege, the city was cut off from the outside world and subjected to constant shelling and sniper fire. Over 10,000 people were killed, including 1,500 children.

The children of Sarajevo endured unimaginable hardship, loss, and trauma during the siege. They witnessed the death of loved ones, their homes were destroyed, and they were forced to live in constant fear. Many children developed PTSD and other psychological problems. Despite the horrors they experienced, the children of Sarajevo showed incredible resilience and courage. They continued to go to school, play games, and create art. They found ways to laugh and have fun, even in the darkest of times.

Child Life in Wartime Sarajevo is a powerful and moving account of the lives of children during the Siege of Sarajevo. Author Jasna Hadzibegovic recounts the stories of children who showed amazing strength resilience in the face of adversity.

  • The Aftermath: This section explores the long-term effects of the siege on the children of Sarajevo.
  • The Legacy: This section looks at the ways in which the children of Sarajevo have helped to rebuild their city and promote peace and reconciliation.
