The Early Years

Baseball first came to Tulsa in 1887 when a team of local businessmen and oilmen formed the Tulsa Oilers. The Oilers played in the Western Association, a minor league that included teams from Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. The Oilers were a successful team, winning several league championships in the early 1900s.

The Minor League Era

In 1910, the Oilers joined the Texas League, a higher level of minor league baseball. The Oilers were a member of the Texas League for over 50 years, and they won several league championships during that time. The Oilers were one of the most popular teams in the league, and their games were often attended by large crowds.

The Tulsa Roughnecks

In 1962, the Oilers were renamed the Tulsa Roughnecks. The Roughnecks continued to play in the Texas League until 1976, when they moved to the American Association. The Roughnecks were a successful team in the American Association, winning several division championships. The Roughnecks folded in 1989.

Baseball in Tulsa Today

Today, Tulsa is home to the Tulsa Drillers, a minor league baseball team that plays in the Texas League. The Drillers are a popular team in Tulsa, and their games are often attended by large crowds.
