Excerpt from Dear Dad From Afghanistan

I remember the day you died like it was yesterday. I was sitting in my high school English class when I was called to the office. My heart sank as I walked down the hall, knowing that something terrible had happened.

When I got to the office, the principal and my guidance counselor were waiting for me. They told me that my father had been killed in Afghanistan. I collapsed to the floor, sobbing. I couldn't believe that my father was gone.

In the days and weeks that followed, I felt lost and alone. I didn't know how to go on without my father. He was my best friend, my mentor, and my hero.

One day, I found a box of my father's letters in the attic. I started to read them, and I felt like I was finally getting to know him again. Through his letters, I learned about his hopes and dreams, his fears and insecurities. I also learned how much he loved me.

Reading my father's letters helped me to heal. I realized that even though he was gone, he would always be with me in spirit. I also found the strength to move on with my life and to make him proud.
