Jack and Doris Smothers were born into poverty and segregation in rural Texas. Despite the formidable challenges they faced, they possessed an unyielding spirit of entrepreneurship. In 1925, they founded the Smothers Funeral Home in Houston, a time when Black-owned businesses were scarce. Their determination and unwavering commitment to serving their community propelled the funeral home into a thriving enterprise.

The Smothers Funeral Home became more than just a place of mourning. It evolved into a symbol of Black resilience and community empowerment. Jack and Doris used their business as a platform to advocate for civil rights and social justice. They provided a safe haven for Black activists and offered financial support to local organizations fighting for equality.

Defying Jim Crow with Unwavering Courage

But they refused to be deterred. They believed in the dignity of their work and the importance of providing a dignified send-off to their fellow Black Texans.

On one occasion, a group of white supremacists vandalized their funeral home and threatened to burn it down. But Jack and Doris stood their ground, defiantly repairing the damage and continuing to serve their community. Their courage and resilience became a source of inspiration for other Black entrepreneurs.

Expanding the Smothers Legacy

Over the years, the Smothers Funeral Home expanded into a multifaceted enterprise that included a real estate agency and insurance company. Jack and Doris became respected business leaders, known for their integrity and commitment to excellence.
