In 1620, the Mayflower sailed across the Atlantic Ocean carrying a group of English Puritans who would go on to found the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts. But what most people don't know is that the Mayflower had a sister ship, the Pilgrim, which carried a rival group of Puritans who founded their own colony in Cape Cod.

The story of the Pilgrim and its passengers is a fascinating one, filled with adventure, discovery, and the birth of a new nation. It is a story that has been largely forgotten, but it is one that deserves to be told.

The Pilgrim's Voyage

The Pilgrim was a smaller ship than the Mayflower, and it carried a smaller group of passengers, about 100 in total. The passengers were a mix of Puritans and Separatists, who were a more radical group of Puritans who believed that the Church of England was corrupt and that they should separate from it.

The Pilgrim set sail from England in July 1620, just a few weeks after the Mayflower. The voyage was a difficult one, and the ship was battered by storms. But after 66 days at sea, the Pilgrim finally arrived in Cape Cod Bay.

The Founding Of The Plymouth Colony

The passengers of the Pilgrim disembarked and began to explore their new home. They found a beautiful and fertile land, but it was also a wilderness. The Pilgrims had to work hard to build their colony, and they faced many challenges, including hunger, disease, and attacks from Native Americans.

But the Pilgrims persevered, and they eventually established a thriving colony. Plymouth Colony became a model for other Puritan colonies in New England, and it played a key role in the founding of the United States.

The Rival Puritan Colony

The passengers of the Pilgrim were not the only Puritans who came to Cape Cod. In 1624, a group of Puritans from England founded a rival colony in Plymouth Colony. This group was led by a minister named John Lyford, who had been excommunicated from the Plymouth Church.

Lyford's colony was located in a place called Merrymount, and it was a very different place than Plymouth Colony. Merrymount was a place of revelry and debauchery, and it quickly became a thorn in the side of the Plymouth colonists.

The Plymouth colonists tried to persuade Lyford and his followers to leave Merrymount, but they refused. In 1627, the Plymouth colonists attacked Merrymount and drove Lyford and his followers out of the colony.

The Legacy Of The Pilgrim

The Pilgrim and its passengers played a key role in the founding of the United States. The colony they established in Plymouth Colony was a model for other Puritan colonies in New England, and it helped to shape the character of the American people.

The story of the Pilgrim is a fascinating one, filled with adventure, discovery, and the birth of a new nation. It is a story that has been largely forgotten, but it is one that deserves to be told.
